Slightly paralyzed special needs pet rat.
February 8th, 2006When I first moved to California, I brought some furniture I ended up not needing. I was pointed to , which is a great way to get rid of your stuff without crowding the landfills. It’s basically a mailing list, and you can post that you have something to offer, or that you are looking for something in particular. The lists for my area get a lot of traffic, and it’s pretty amazing how much stuff gets passed along.
I soon learned that PEOPLE WILL OFFER ANYTHING.
And SOMEONE WILL TAKE IT.
Anything.
Today a finally took my advice and used Freecyle to get rid of his moving boxes. This reminded me that I used to keep a list of some of my favorite entries. So I dug it up:
OFFER: Llama fiber.
I also have a bag of llama fiber, from a shearing. It still contains
all of the guard hairs, etc. Probably a couple of pounds (needs to be
cleaned and carded). This is really nice when carded with wool.
Llama fiber. Who knew?
Wanted: 4 Laying hens.
Any breed. No roosters please.
Mind you, this is from the Palo Alto list.
OFFER: 32oz. tub of Whole Milk Vanilla Yogurt
With cream on top.
Because just a plain tub of SOMEONE ELSE’S YOGURT might not be worth responding to, but THERE’S CREAM ON TOP.
OFFER: outdated coffee
Found several half empty sacks of coffee in the freezer. I think they
are from 2003. Also have packets from hotel stays for the in-room
coffee maker.
You can’t make this stuff up.
OFFER: Special needs pet rat needs good home
Albino female is blind, and slightly paralyzed on one side. Cage and
accessories (including her best friend – a healthy, spotted female
rat) are also available. Both rats are roughly 1 year old.
Serious offers of loving new homes only, please. If she ends up as
snake food (intentionally) karma will take care of you.
I got nothin’.

Subscribe to the Greenville SC Freecycle group for some really funny ones too.
Seriously, I don’t know how I could have forgotten about your blog for so long. I know I knew about it once, but dang it. It IS chock full of morsely goodness!
I’m just thinkin that karma may also take care of the person that is kicking the slightly paralyzed blind albino rat out of their house … but hey, life is all about choices (-_^)
Around here with all the military moving going on, you can sell your moving boxes for about $1 a piece! So, it’s a bonus for us…we get moved for free (including all the packing materials) then we can sell it for a little extra! And I’m going to join our local freecycle again…just for the laughs! Thanks for reminding me!
MMMmmm rat! Forget about the snake, rat: it’s what’s for dinner! Ok, so it’s an acquired taste.
Okay, North Carolina apparently isn’t the place to subscribe to Freecycle. All I got in the past two days were bread, bags of used clothes and miscellany, and a changing table. Blah.
Okay, just to let you know I had to unsubscribe from the Freecycle emails. They were too irritating for me to continue reading… The one that put me over the top was someone who asked for items for a new puppy. I’m sorry, but if someone has enough money to get a puppy, they have no right asking for people to donate a collar, bed, or toys.
I have to subscribe in digest format, Jen. Otherwise it’s just too much! Or I just unsubscribe and go look at postings on the site. It can be overwhelming.
I do want to point out that Freecycle isn’t really about need, or saving money. If I have something lying around that I’m not using, I’d much rather just give it to someone who can use it than toss it in a landfill. Need doesn’t really factor in for me. Plus, puppies are just about free to be had from shelters (I’ve gotten all my pets from shelters, as have most people I know) so I’m not sure it’s fair to judge there.
I agree that some of the requests are just plain over the top though!
Thanks. I had never heard of the website. But of course had to go check it out. Couldnt find one for my area, but joined the one that was closest.
